LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the above Council was held on Monday even, ing; present—the Mayor and Council.'ora Stinson, Schumacher, Pairmaa, Lautensoa. Owen, Webb and Chambers. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor Mitchell. Correspondence was received From Mr Q. Croll, Government .Inspector of Machinery, reporting inspection of boilers at water-works. Prom the Charitable Aid Board, regarding the Bill now before Parliament, to vest the Orphanage and site in the Board. The letter was referred to the Estates Committee to'report upon. The reports of the Foreman of Work* and the Finance Commmittee, the latter reporting that the receipts since last meeting were *8371 lls 9d, and recommending payments amounting to .£197 Os 9d, were, adopted. The Works Committee reported against bearing part of the cost of fence /at Mr Olsen’s property, and suggested thajfc a wall should be erected at the spot wornplained of by Mr Wilson. They also, recommended that stone be blasted out on the old Governor’s Bay road, and that some of the surplus labour of the port should be employed to break it. The price they suggested to give was 2s 9fi peryardat the far point and 2a per yard at the spot nearer the town. They also suggested that trees should be planted ou reserve 68. The report was, after some discussion, adopted. Tha Colonists’ Hall Committee recommended certain alterations to the hall. Agreed to. It was resolved to take over the roads on Somes’ estate on condition that the proprietors laid them out to the width of half a chain, and conveyed them to the Council free of cost. The Lighting Committee reported that from careful Inquiries made it had been found that the town conld be lighted by electricity cheaper and better than it is at present by gas and kerosene. The Committee estimated that the init al cost would be between JBI4OO and £ll5OO, but the annual cost would be less than at present. The Committee acknowledged indebtedness for information received from Sydney and from Mr Meddmgs. Schedules of cost of erection and maintenance were attached to the report, as was also a schedule giving the comparative cost of gas and electric lighting. The report was ordered to lie on the table tall next meeting, then to be discussed. After disposing of several minor matters the meeting terminated.
