In the course of a speech to-day, Mr Gladstone, in referring to the expulsion of the Jews from Bussia, said nothing was to be gained by denouncing the revolting treatment to which they are subjected, and it would be better to appeal to the European public, after preparing a digest of the exceptional laws of Bussia.
In the House of Commons to-day, Mr Smith, in reply to a question, said the Government would consider the necessity of placing some restriction on the influx of destitute foreigners into Great Britain.

The French Minister for War has sent a grateful message of thanks to Lord Charles Beresford, Commander of H.M.S. Undaunted, for the assistance rendered by him to the French warship Seigneloy, when she stranded on a sandbank off Jaffa, on the Levant coast.
