AUCKLAND, Mat 30.
Dr Murray, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Maitland, who is in ill-health, has left Auckland for Te Aroha. He arrived in this city on his way to San Francisco, but was too ill to proceed. He is accompanied by the Eav Father Tran. An illuminated address, signed by all the volunteer officers of the Auckland district, was presented to-day to Lieutenant-Colonel Shepherd, who recently commanded the district. The presentation was made by Lieutenant-Colonel Dignan, at the drill shed in the presence of a large number of officers and men.
The County rate-collector at Dargaville, F. L. Beart, has been arrested on a charge of embezzling £4O belonging to the County. Be was brought before Messrs J. M. Dargaville and Norton, J.P.’s, at the Dargaville Police Court to-day, when the case was remanded till Tuesday. Bail was refused. Two other charges are pending against the accused. Beart was greatly respected in the district, and much sympathy is felt for his wife-and children.
