LICENSING COMMITTEE .

ASHBURTON. The Ashburton Licensing Committee mot yesterday ol the Courthouse j present Messrs D. Thomas (Chairmaa)r B; Alcorn, S. Saunders, and T. Scaly. The police reported favourably on the licensed booses in the town. O. £. Milner applied for a confirmation of the transfer of the Central license from John Beecher, to himself. Mr Parnell, for the deputy Official Assignee, opposed the application. From the evidence it appeared that Beecher had, throe days previous to his bankruptcy, transferred his license to Milner. Mr Purnell contended that the estate was entitled to whatever the license was worth, butQjPeocher had transferred it without receiving any consideration. He had done so on the advice of Mr Joynt, solicitor for Alfred Stoning, who held a bill of sale over Beecher’s furniture and stock. After argument, the application was adjourned for 14 days. Consideration was also adjourned of an application by Mr Quill, for himself and the other publicans, to be relieved from the necessity of keeping ligbte burning in front of their premises afternisensed hours. TIMAEU. At the quarterly meeting yesterday, the police report was satisfactory, except that Mr Palmer, licensee ol the Lynwood Hotel, was stated to be carrying on his former business of auctioneer. The Bench granted the transfer of the license from D. Mahoney to Palmer on condition that the latter did not again infringe the law by bolding auction salts while occupying the position of a licensee. The Committee also intimated that notices would shortly be served upon the licensees of the Royal and Clarendon Hotels to erect now premises in lieu of the present wooden ones.
