FIRES.

[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, April 2S. A fire occurred at one o'clock this morning, in a block of wooden shops in Victoria street west. It destroyed three of the shops, and damaged the others. The shops burned were occupied by Gadd, fruiterer ; Carr, bootmaker, and Kirkman, milliner. The fire originated in Gadd's shop, which is in the (tentre of the block, and spread so rapidly that the Brigade, though early on the spot, had great difficulty in checking it. Gadd's house was owned by Mrs Wallace, and was insured in the Northern office for .£BOO. The stock and furniture were insured for .£2OO in the South British. The premises occupied by Carr, Kirkman, Richardson, and Johnson were owned by Mr Ball, Mount Eden, and were insured for £2OO each in the Royal. Carr, bootmaker, was insured as follows :—Furniture £IOO, and stock and fittings £IOO, both in the New Zealand office. Mrs Kirkman had her furniture and stock insured for £2OO in the Norwich Union. Thero are other policies on the adjacent buildings, but they will only bo partial losses. A fresh outbreak occurred at 5 o'clock this morning. Senior Branchman Harloy and Branchmen Mooto and Heaps took the hose upon the verandah to play upon the flames, when the verandah suddenly gave way, and the men fell heavily to the paveniout beneath. Harley was injured internally, and suffered severe pain; Moore was injured in the hip and shoulder, and Heaps broke his anklo. „ WANGANUI, April 2s. A fire occm-red yesterday in Mrs Walker's millinery shop. Cordoza's (fruiterer) and Hannah's (bootmaker) escaped without damage. The fire is supposed to have commenced at the bottom of the staircase. Mrs Walker and her family made their escape by the verandah. The stock was all burnt, but the front of the building remains intact. Insurances : On stock, £IOOO in the Royal, £ISOO in the
