[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Apeil 28. The charge of broaching cargo, preferred by Captain Glazebrook, of the barque Alastor, againsS ten seamen belonging to that vessel, is to be heard on Wednesday. It is alleged that the cargo was first broached on Feb. 7, one month after the Alastor left London, when there were stolen 49 bottles of stout and two cases, containing Bdoz preserved milk. One of the men, it appears, sold some of the latter to a passenger, and by this means Captain Glazebrook discovered that pilfering had been carried on.

The first Diocesan Synod ever held in Auckland in connection with the Eoman Catholic Church will be opened on Thursday next, in St Patrick's Cathedral, with the celebration of Pontifical High Mass. At the close of the Mass, the laity will withdraw and the Synod will be constituted by clergy alone from all parts of the diocese. •The matters for consideration are chiefly connected with the administration of the diocese. On Sunday afternoon the foundation stone of St Patrick's Cathedral will be laid, with becoming ceremonies, by the Bishop. During next week Bishop Luck leaves on a visit to Koine.

A large shipment of New Zealand timber, specially selected as samples, is being forwarded to New York by the brigantine Peerless, now ready for sea. The collection was ordered by a gentleman now a resident of New York.

The Western Springs Estate, which affords the city water supply, was offered at auction to-day. The Town Clerk bid £9500, but it was withdrawn- at .£IO,OOO, some .£12,000 to £13,000 being demanded. The prevalence of fever is attributed by medical men to imperfect drainage and dry weather.

A man named Eobert Dollock, aged 40, was working in a scoria pit at Mangere to-day, and was loading a cart, when 100 tons of stuff came down, completely burying him. It took seven men an hour and a quarter to uncover the lifeless body. A man woi-lcing with him was also injured in the chest. Dollock is a single man. WELLINGTON, Afbil 28. Mr T. Hill, of Opoki, Wairarapa, who returned from Sydney last night by the Wakatipu, has brought with him the thoroughbred horse Lord Mandeville, who is by Yattendon out of Lady Constance, thus being a full brother to the well-known racers, Lord Burghley and Lord Lisgar. Mr HUI intends to race Lord Mandeville next season. While in Sydney he also purchased a yearling, by Goldsbrough— Lady Jet, but as the youngster is well engaged in Australia, he will not be shipped to New Zealand until he has fulfilled his engagements there. *' BLENHEIM, Apeil 28. The half-yearly sittings of the Supreme Court begin to-morrow morning, before Mr Justice' Bichmond. There is only one criminal case, the remainder of the business consisting of a motion for a decree absolute in divorce, and an appeal from the Eesident Magistrate's Court. The sitting is expected to be very brief. DUNEDIN, Apkil 28. _ Constable King, of Tapanui, made a raid on a Chinese gambling house on Saturday night. He arrested four men, and seized the gambling instruments, money, and jewellery. Pinal arrangements have been made in connection with the removal of the Public Works Department to Wellington. To-day the office furniture was packed away for transmission to that city. The annual meeting of the Acclimatisation Society was held to-day. Mr J. P. Maitland was re-elected President. Notice of motion was given that the subscription be reduced from £1 to 10s, in order to encourage a wider interest in the operations of the Society. For an aggravated assault on an arresting constable, committed on Sunday morning, George Child, painter, was fined £lO or two months' imprisonment; and a mate named Anderson, who tried to assist him, was fined £5 or one month.
