SOUTH OANTBBBUBY. The Board met yesterday t present • Mresr* hi. Wakefield (Chairman), Goldsmith, Stowaid, Walcot, and Dr Foster. CHAIBMAS'a eTATSXtKKT. The Chairman reported aa fdllows:—Waiho an* 1 . Milford district* had duly elected Committees, Mr Seroomb, master of Waituaa Creek bdbool, having been adversely reported upon by the Inspectors on eereral occasions, had received notice of dismissal. His character I was blameless, but he was unsuitable. The ' purchase of a piece of land from Mr Hart for the Waimataitai school had been negotiated, and .several other routine matters had been attended to. K.XOTIOK 07 KBMBEB3. The election of three member* of the Board, to servo in tbe place* of Messrs Stack, Gold* smith, and Wakefield, resulted in the return of Messrs K. Wakefield, Bev Cl. Barclay, and 8. W. Goldsmith. Mr John Talbot was elected to fill the extraordinary vacancy caused by tho reeigna tion of Mr H. Belfleld. Division or omcaa. Mr Walcot moved the motion standing in his name—" That tho offiees of Inspector and Secretary be at onoe divided, Mr Hammond to retain the office of Inspector, and a Secretary to be appointed at a salary of net more than £2OO per annum." In speaking to the motion, he remarked that the inspectoral i work suffered from the presa of basinets falling on the protent Secretary, who filled the joint effioea of Secretary and Inspector. He thought tho additional expenditure could bo borne and would be money well spent. Mr Steward seconded the motion, remarking that Committees had complained generally of want of despatch in tending Inspector's reports. He thought the double duties devolving on Mr Hammond were ox ceisive. Mr Darker thought the ofitoes should be divided most certainly. Mr Goldsmith desired to let the matter stand over to a full meeting. The Chairman said ho had found that tho matter was one of expense ; he did not think £2OO a year sufficient to offer. Dr Foster moved, aa an amendment—- " That in the opinion of the Board it ia de* tirabie that the duces bo divided at soon aa postible." Mr Walcot, with permission, withdrew hit motion, and seconded tho amendment, whioh then, becoming the substantive motion, was oarried. DBPPTAIIOK PEOM TBMOXft., A deputation from the Temuka School Committee waited upsn the Board to ask for certain extensions of tho plans on whioh the now school buildingt were to be orectcd. Mr )X M. Maokay, Chairman of the Com* mittee, called upon the Bev G. Barclay to state the viewt of the deputation. That gontloman did to at very considerable length. Tho Chairman taid tbe matter was one of finance. The Board oould not possibly afford the additional expenditure involved, and were grieved to find the liberal provision they had nude did not satisfy the Committee. He, moreover, thought the buildingt did not ia reality reauire aay externum, but were safil* oient for the requirements of the place. The Chairmaa of the Committee, Mr Maokay, taid the population lately had been steadily on tho increaie, and very shortly it would bo necota&ry to make tome addition*. The Boaittn Oatholio School, to bo opened in Temuka, would not diminish the attendance of the pub'io school by twenty children. The Board, having ooiosidared the matter, informed the deputation thut tbe lowest tender for tbe budding, aa per plan, wat in excess of the amount set aside for the purpose, and it would now be dlfitcult to carry out oven that. Any additional expense, therefore, was out of the question. Tbe deputation thanked tho fisard and withdrew.
