A special meeting of tbe Lytteiton Borough Council wat held at tht Colonists' Hall iast rrtntogi pfetttl—Hie Wofthip tht Mayor, Councilors Ohtttnm, Puaoed, Fyfs, Bted, Weybotne, and Ilaodonald, Tht Mayor said that the netting had been ealled to consider tht question of the manage, mentof theCfoionisw Strand Library 1 to decide wb«tl)«r asiy altsration should be made in tht Hall to suit tht purposes of a Council Chamber, of to Minder it mure convenient for tht purposes for which it wit* established, A statement of acoounls would be prepared shortly, thawthf wxselly th* Hall's flaacdal position. It wat a question whether a Committee should bf appointed, or the whole Council undertake the management. Councillor Chalmers thought that tht Council! should endeavour to carry on the Hall, to at to meet tht public taaia, a matter in which the Coleniris' Society had to tome extent failed. He moved management of the Halt rent with tht whole Council, four to form a quorum." Councillor Dimottd seconded tht motion, which wat agreed to unanimously. Councillor Fyfe thought that the first efforts of the Council should be derated to improving tho library, and, that being aooon* plished, they might direct tboir attention to tht alterations and improvements in the building. Councillor Baod was of opinion that the building needed as much attention at the books. Ha understood It wat not weather proof. The Mayor stated that tbe total indebtednet* of the Colonists' Society, ;wben their affairs were taken over by tht Council, wat £9B It, Of this, £49 8a 0d had been paid off, leaving a balance awing of about £6O. It was decided that the subscription to the Library be £1 per year, payable quarterly is advance as formerly. Councillor Fyfe proposed—" That £2O be expended in tho purchase of new books for the library, to be selected by a Committee, consisting of the Mayor, Councillors Chalmers, Maodonald and the mover." Councillor Bead seconded the motion. Councillor Weyburne moved at an amend* ment~"Tbtt£6o be substituted for £20." Tbe mover accepted thit, and tbe mntioe patted at amended. It was resolved, on the motion of Conn* cillor Beed—-"That tbe reading room be open to the publio free of charge. Tho V*rks Committee wna appointed a Buildingvummittee to consider and estimate tho oott of any necessary repairs or altera*' tiont to the Hs.ll. Councillor Chalmers submitted a sketch f)lou of improvements to the badding, inciudng provision for a coffee room. After tome farther basinets had been transacted, tho meeting adjourned.
