WAIMATS. The monthly meeting of this Committee wat held on Monday evening! present—The Bev Mr MlCee (Chairman), and Messrs Goldsmith, Bannister, Smith and Dr Chilton. A letter waa read from Mr J. Talbot, Temuka, soliciting the support of this Committee ta a candidate for tho stab on the South Canterbury Beard of Bdueatfon, rsndtred vacant by the resignation of Mr JJelfleld. Tht nominations not having been reoeived, the Committee rttolred not to take any action. Tht Visiting Committee reptrted that on a recent visit they found tht staff workinjr in harmony, tht dlsolpHat good, the ohlidrea clean, and evidently making satisfactory progress. The Inspector added— J ft» percentage of passes shows that th* school foM made satisfactory progress, but the general quality of th* work presented i$ not uniformly good. 2be lower classes, Standard* 11. and I, and iatmU, are welt conducted and put a good examination. Standard 111. produce* ereditabl* work, bet the disciplin* and tone are far from satisfactory. The i higher classes, Standard* I?., V., and ?L, hara mads very fair progress for the year, but, a* will bo seen by th* das* lists, tba work ie uneven and does sot reach a good standard of general accuracy and excellence." A long and animated discussion look place in regard to opettisg the new «ehool—expected to be computed in about a fortnight—io a fitting manner. The head master said it was proposed to giro a concert, to be followed by a play, the whole to coaolude with a balL iJrObilton propoeedthat the matter be left to a sub-Committee. Messrs Ooldimith and Bannister objected to a ball being given, aad the Chairman stated that in M* opinion a ball would prevent a large cumber of persona from being present. Ultimately, Dr Chilton withdrew hi* resolution, and it wa* resolved to hold a meeting oa March 18 to consider the bett mean* for properly celebrating the opening of the now school. After appointing visitors, the Committee adjourned.
