MR FLESHER AND THE RIVER RESERVES.

TO THE EDITOE OB THB iTTTKLTON TfMBS. Sib, —I was in hopes that I had taken leave of this subject in my last letter, bat this morning Mr Fieshor endeavoured to place me in a false position by misrepresentation, .which I beg you will allow me to put right. He leads, by implication, to the impression that ! asked for his vote towards the stoppage of the River road, and even that I tried a little bit of “ log-rolling” in the shape of offering him my vote for his. It is true that I spoke to Mm on the subject of the said road, but when he explained his views on the subject I replied that, from his point of view, I thought he was perfectly light. The rest of onr “interview," as ho terms it, was on other subjects. I may here state that I think tho ratepayers were perfectly right not to allow their reserves to bo alienated, if they bad the smallest fear that it might ever bo applied to any other than boating purposes. Though hod I attended the meetinglshouldcertainly have voted myself for the stoppage of tho road, as, personally, I have no fear of such misapplication, I have little doubt that the matter will shortly be settled in a satisfactory manner between the Boat Clubs and the Road Board; but I cannot see much object in retaining the “six foot” right of way as proposed. There will be no occasion for the publio to pass that way, and they would only get in the way of the boating men.—l am, Ac., MICHAEL S. CAMPBELL. Feb. 5,1879. P.S.—A* to the “quandary," one of us is certainly in a hole. I can leave tho public to say which. TO TUB EDITOE OP THB IVTTBtTON TIMES. Sib, —Some correspondence appears in your columns relative to the endeavours of Mr Michael Campbell of securing from the Avon Road Board, that portion of the river road nearly adjoining tho foot-bridge in course of erection by tho City Council on the Bast belt. One very great objection to this concession being made by the Board—let alone that of alienating any of the river frontage—is, that Mr Campbell has already partially blocked up the northern approaches of the new bridge in Iris greed to mako as much as possible by the cutting into lots of tbe property. Let the Avon Road Board, ap well as the ratepayers interested, have another look at the uJo map of the estate, and they will see that Mr Campbell lias retained a slice of low-lying

laud, the boundary of which actually crosses th* direct line of traffic; Its position f. so vory close to the head of the bridge os to materially affect tho filling in of the approaches t and if Mr Campbell persists in withholding the whole of it from the street, any future attempt of tho ratepayers to get a bridge fit far wheeled traffic must a /brttori be denied them by either the Council or the Board, as there will not be sufficient roadway left to construct the approaches.—l am, Ac., ; A RESIDENT BATKPAYER. Christchurch, Feb. 6.
