SELBY AS A RUNNER.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE LYTTELTON TIMES. Sir, —I read in your issue of Friday last, an effusion from the pen of a person signing himself " Samuel P. Andrews,” which goes to show that Selby did not do his best in the late foot race. Perhaps he did not. At anyrate, ab opportunity has been given to " Samuel P. Andrews ” to inform the public ot the estimation in which file opinion is held, both locally aud universally. This OBtimation.it appears, it of a high order. It is gratifying to find that both “in and out of Canterbury” an inability to write grammatical English is no bar to tbo appreciation of sterling merit. As one illustration “ Andrews ” says that his object in giving his version of the affair is .not to despise Frith. I, as a plain unlettered man, should have used the worn disparage. Oan this “ Andrews ” bo the individual who recently eougbt a Parliamentary position ? If so, I wish to condole with the local publicon the loss which they have inflicted upon themselves and tho world at large. Let us console ourselves with the hope that a moro discriminating public out of Canterbury will not fail to avail theuiEelves of tho educational attainments and folio! y of expression (so useful in ministerial office) possessed by your eminent correspondent. I am, &0., JONES.
