VITAL STATISTICS.

The Registrar-General reports on the Vital Statistics of the seven Boroughs named below, for tho month of January, as follows; __ : mated Proportion Popula- Total Total of deaths to 8 * tlon, Births. The deaths of parsons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases. The estimates of the populations of the boroughs given here are Hot, as before, merely an addition of the excess over births to the census figures for March, 1874, as it has- become evident that such estimates aro not sufficiently accurate. Tho number of persons to a house has been assumed to be tho same as whoa the census was taken, and tho population calculated on the number of inhabited bouses in each borourh at, the present time, as shown in returns supplied by the municipal authorities. Tho birtbs wore 35 more than in Deo. 1876. The deaths were 9 more in number than the deaths in Dec., 1876. Of tho death, males contributed 92; females, 55; 82 of the deaths wore of children under 5 years of age, being 50 per cent of the whole number; 62 of the*e were children under 1 year of age. There wore 6 deaths of persona of 65 years of age and over; 4of these persons were males and 2 females ; of these, 2 males aged 70 and 77 died at Auckland; 1 male aged 68 at Wellington; and 1 male aged 65, and 2 females aged 68 and 79, at Dunedin.
