COMMERCIAL.

The arrival of the Tudor from London on the 23rd September ha 9 not had much effect on the market, as, owing to her long voyage, most of her goods were anticipated, and many parcels sold to arrive. She has been a week discharging, so that very little of her cargo has as yet found its way into Christchurch. On the whole, the mercantile community is very quiet, and in prices—as will be seen by comparing this with last month's list—very little change has taken place. The West Coast road not being open, we have not bad the drain upon our goods anticipated by those who were most sanguine on this head, and the general complaint is still of the dulness of things generally.

We had hoped to have been enabled by this mail to report to our London friends the opening, for dray traffic, of the road from Christchurch to Hokitika; but we cannot even get a satisfactory report as to the progress made by the various road parties. The Chamber of Commerce have taken the matter in hand, and purpose sending two of their members to report progress as to the condition of the whole line. This we shall be glad to receive in time for our next summary. The Mullogh, steamer, reported in our last as wrecked at Sumner bar, has been raised, and is now undergoing repairs ; we hope Boon to see this useful little boat at work. We are given to understand that both the Moa and Waipara will be in service during the coming wool season, so that the settlers will have their clip shipped with the same regularity and speed as during the last season. The shipping business with Lyttelton has been very light this mouth. Not so with Hokitika, where matters are almost overdone —goods pouring into that portion of our province from every quarter of New Zealand, as also from Melbourne and Sydney. The following are the land sales for the month ending yesterday Christchurch, 355 acres 3 roods 31 perches; Ashley, 495 acres; Timaru, 175; Mandeville, 26; Ellesmere, 718; Lyttelton, 32; Oxford, 248 acres 2 roods 16 perches ; Malvern, 574 acres ; Ashburton, 366; Wuitangi, 20; Upper Christchurch, 426 ; Rakaia, JSO ; town of Bealey, 1 acre O roods 21 perches. Total, 3687 acres 2 roods 28 perches. The cash received was £7448 18s 9d.

The only remarks we have to offer on the markets this month are brief.

Beers remain as quoted hut month, and we do not anticipate any great advance in price this season, the Canterbury brewed beer coming now into general favour and use. We have the same remark to make as in our last with respect.to bottled porters—the best brands being very scarce; but as the warm weather comes in, this article will not have so many consumers.
