SEVERE GALE IN ARROWTOWN.

At aa early hour on Tuesday morn ing last Arrowtown was the apparent centre of the heaviest gale that has been experienced in this district for many years, A strong wind sprang up suddenly about 1.45 a m. and half an hour later the gale had developed into a hurricane The wind travelled with a terrific roar and awakened every resident of the town, while the noise of falling limbs of trees and the rattling of iron roofs caused considerable alarm. The gale lasted for about an hour, but fortunately no serious damage has been reported. Many trees were blown down, and orchards suffered severely, apple and p-ar trees being almost denuded of their fruit. Several outhouses were also damaged, but taking the severity of the gale in tor consideration the town escaped luckily. In the country several stacks were blown over, ai d a crop of pets, the property of Mr Harry Scott, which hj id been raked up preparatory to stacking, was blown all over the field, Tne gale was followed by heavy rain which continued until 10 a.m.
