Inspector Wylie has just completed a visit of inspection to the various schools in toe Lakes District. Miss Bobbie, wbo has occupied the position of sole teacher of Gibbston school for the past year, has resigned. The death occurred at Dunedin on Monday of Mrs Frances Amalia Raphael, relict of Mr Edward Raphael, Deceased was a sister of the late Mrs Wra. Paterson, of Ayrburn, and had reached the advanced age of 82 years. She was possessed of a charming personality, and was held in high esteem by all who knew her. Th“ Wyndham Herald says that Mr Thomas Knight has been appointed Home Missionary for Redan-Mokoreta chtrge. Mr Knight has served the Presbyterian Church as a missionary fo' many years, and was stationed at Arrowtown for four years. Since leaving Arrowtown Mr Knight has been stationed at Kumara and Cheviot. Mr and Mrs J T Burrell, of Palmerston North, are at present on a visit to this district. Forty years ago Mr Burrell was a well known resident of Arrowtown, and in 1882 be occupied the rmyoral chair. He is also a Past Ms.it. r or Lodge Arrow Kilwinning. Mr Burrell recently disposed of his bu’iness in Palmerston North, and he is at present on holiday. On the eve of their departure from * P«mbrok° a farewell social was tendered <o Mr and Mrs L F McCormack, of the Wanaka Hotel. There was a large gathering, (says the Argus). A pro semation of a well-filled purse of sovereigns was made by Mr W A Soaife, chairman, who referred in felicitous terms to the many good qualities of the guests of the evening, and the regret of all at their departure. Mr McCormack made an appropriate reply. During tbeir stay of nearly two years in Pem nr ike, Mr and Mrs McCormack made many friends and carry with them the sincere good wishes of all for their fu ura welfare and happiness. The death is reported from Welling, ton of Mr Charles Whelan, who retired fr m the postal service some years ago. Deceased was a nephew of the late Mr James Whelan, Arrowtown, and came to fihis district in the early days. Before coming to New Zealand he bad been in the employ of the postal department in his native town in Ireland, and after spending a short time mining at Whitechapel Flat, Arrow, he joined the staff of the local post office. He was postmaster at Tapanui for many years and was afterwards stationed at Gore. On leaving Gore he became Chief Postmaster at Blenheim, from which position be retired on superannuation. It is understood that the deceased bad been for some time a suffsrer from paralysis of the throat.
