MINER'S DISEASE.

Before the Mines’ Commission, Auckland, Dr Guinness gave evidence as to miners’ disease. He said that there was a distinction between consumption and miners’ disease. At Waihi in some cases tubercle, it was found, was not due to miners’ complaint, but was introduced in connection with it. He knew one family at Waihi several of whom died from miners’ complaint. All that family, however, had tubercle. Men whom he had advised to quit mining had practically recovered from miners’ disease. The best preventives were improved ventilation and sanitary conveniences, less inhalation of candle smoke and smoke from blasting, and segregation of tubercular patients.
