GOLDFIELDS' CHALLENGE SHIELD.

A meeting of officers of the goldfields’ volunteer corps was held in Dawson’s Hotel last Thursday morning. Present: Captains Algie, J oily, Porter and Smith, Lieutenants Baird, Reid, Perrelle and Warburton. Captain Algie was voted to the chair. On the motion of Capt. Jolly and Lieut. Warburton, the following resolution was passed unanimously That the volunteer companies of Central Otago—viz, Wakatipu Mounted Rifles, and Queenstown, Alexandra and Cromwell Rifles, procure a Challenge Trophy Shield, value about sixteen guineas ; the amount to be subscribed fro rata by the companies interested. The shield to be fired for annually at different centres as arranged and to become the property of any company winning it thrice in succession. It was resolved that the officers of the corps form the management committee. Capt. Jolly was appointed chairman of the committee and Private A. C. Murray, Cromwell, Rifles, secretary. It was decided that the competing teams consist of 7 men aside. In order to decide where the matches were to be fired, the names of the four companies were placed in a hat and drawn in the following order :—Cromwell, Queenstown, Arrow and Alexandra. Resolved :—'Hiat the committee fix conditions of competition on a dual scale for either Snider or Lee-Enfield, and that they have power to arrange for other competitions to be fired at the same time.—Cromwell Argus.
