FAREWELL SOCIAL.
A farewell social was tendered the Her. Mr Stevens in the Atheneum Hall on Friday last. The attendance was large, and the social a great success. Mr J. Orr occupied the chair, and in his opening remarks, referred to the popularity of the Rev. Mr Stevens and the good work done by him during his stay in the district. They all regretted Mr Stevens’s departure. Later on in the evening, Mr Orr, on behalf of the residents, presented Mr Stevens with a purse of sovereigns as a token of esteem and regard. Mr M‘Dowell, on behalf of the Presbyterian Church, regretted Mr Stevens’s departure. Mr Stevens had come to the assistance of his church in helping with the services, and the speaker could assure Mr Stevens that he was carrying away with him the hearty good wishes of the Presbyterians of the district. Mr M'Dowell eulogised the good work done throughout the district by Mr Stevens. In conclusion he wished Mr Stevens God-speed A letter was read from the Rev, H. J. Brooke apologising for his unavoidable absence. Mr Stevens feelingly replied. His *hort stay in Arrowtown was very pleasant, and he would long remember the kindnesses of its people. He had simply done his duty, and never for a moment expected such a handsome present. He had his little differences with some of the folk at times, but he thought he could safely say he was l leaving the district without an enemy. “ In conclusion Mr Stevens thanked the people for their most generous gift. The musical portion of the programme was under the conductorship of Mr P. White.
