MAROKOPA 18 v. OPARAU 3

Considerable interest was evinced in tbe meeting of Oparau and Marokopa, which took place at Kawhia last Saturday before a large crowd of spectators. At tbe outset Marokopa forced the play, early in tbe game being awarded a penalty kick near the Oparau goal, but failed to score. Give and take play followed, until Kupa (Marokopa) drew first blood for ths southerners by placing a goal from a murk. Oparau then rallied and made matters warm for Mato kopa, whose backs put up a strong and safe defence. Forward play took the ball into Oparau territory, where Henderson took a penalty kick and landed another goal : Marokopa 6 Oparau Q. Oparau showed to advan age in scrum work (J. Morgan and J. Scott beii g conspicuous in the line out), and, making iha pace, their forwards took the leather to tbe Maco kopa line, where a faulty kck gave M. Gilbert a clear run, and he registered Oparau’s first and only try : Oparau 3—Marckoph 6. A brilliant combination on the pert of the Marokopa threeqoarter line quite outclassed che, nonhern defsuce, J. Scott (Marokopa) tooting : Marokopa 9 —Oparau 3. A further goal from a penalty kick increased the southerners’' lead, while pretty combination between Henderson and Buckeridge enabled the latter to secure a well-won try ; in neither case were tbe major points added ; Marokopa 15 —Oparau 3. The Oparau defence agaiu failed when smart passing between Whitinui and Henderson took tbe ball do the Oparau Line, J. Scott again scoring for tbe southern team ; Marokopa 18—Oparau 3. The noriberners now played up urougly, and a continuous attack on Marokopa concluded an interesting match.

Marokopa’s rear division was the most striking feature, particularly the itireequarter line, in which Henderson was tbe shining light. On the whole, iparau’s defence was disappointingly weak.
