Felicitations.

Musical, sporting and aquatic circles were fully represented at a gathering in Kawhia last Saturday night, when a large number of friends assembled to offer onr local postmaster, Mr T. F. Gibbons, their hearty congratulations on the occasion of his projected marriage. Mr A. E. Langley presided, and he, with other speakers, expressed their high appreciation of Mr Gibbons services, not only in his official capacity, but as a citizen, and an enthusiastic supporter of social movements. Toasts reflecting the guest’s association with various phases of social life in Kawhia were proposed—“ Sports,” “ Aquatic ” and “ Music ” having appreciative reference to Mr Gibbons’ assistance in these departments. General satisfaction was voiced that he would resume and retain his official position with humorous forecasts of a musical evening when he returned. On behaif of the native race, Mr Taui Wetere, in a felicitous speech, also added Maori congratulations appropriate to the occasion.

In responding, Mr Gibbons feelingly acknowledged the cordial sentiments expressed by the various speakers. He freely admitted the assistance and co-operation he had experienced at the hands of all, and warmly reciprocated their goodwill. He disclaimed any outstanding share in promoting aquatic iffairs placing Kawhia easily in the lead of coastal ports in these matters. He pointed to several individuals and groups who had enthusiastically co-operated and concluded by thanking all present for their good wishes. A pleasing programme of songs and musical selections idded variety to the proceedings ind the items were highly appreciated. Among general toasts “ Local Bodies, ” ' “ Pioneers, ” “ The Ladies ” and “ The Press ” were duly honoured, and the gathering dispersed with the singing of “ Auld Lang Syne ” and the National Anthem.
