The tasks which break-down crews of garages are called upon to perform include many others than towing and lifting stranded or wrecked motor cars. The mechanics of a Hastings garage were summoned to lift a cow on a farm at Manateretere, which was lying "on its side and could not raise itself to its feet. The animal had been lying on wet ground for some days, and in that time had developed severe rheumatism, causing its joints to swell. It was hoped that by placing the animal on its feet and providing suitable supports it eventuallly would be able to walk. Lifting the beast proved to be no easy task, and despite carefully placed ropes, the mechanics could not succeed.
