MANGAPEHI NOTES

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Mangapehi Women’s Institute was held in the Mangapehi Hall on Wednesday afternoon, there being an attendance of 16 members and two visitors. After the recitation of the Aspirations and singing of the Ode to Friendship, an unusually large amount of correspondence was dealt with and the new member was welcomed and enrolled.

All responded to the Roll Call: “What picture did you like best, and where did you see it?”, and Mrs. Newton, the president, supplied the motto for the month: “Let your criticism be constructive rather than destructive.” To introduce the Golden Thread, Our Royal Family, Mrs. Amundsen read a very interesting article telling of Queen Elizabeth’s girlhood, and treasures. Also of particular interest to members were letters received from the Institute’s link in both New Lynn and Belmont, Canada.

Mrs. Drinkrow then demonstrated organdie work, and showed several dainty completed examples suitable for gifts. Competitions for the premiere flower, and best sponge with two eggs, were won by Mrs. Reinhardt and Mrs. Goodin. A suite of pianoforte duets, “Sweet Smiles,” “Fairy Waltz,” “Round the Maypole,” and “Over Hill and Dale,” by the Misses Valerie and Monica Costello, pupils of Miss Buck, were greatly appreciated, and after afternoon tea had been served by the hostesses, Mesdames Costello, Cressy, and Miss Buck, the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. About 30 members attended the second practice meeting of the Mangapehi St. John Ambulance Association, which was held in the supper room of the Mangapehi Hall on Tuesday evening last. Personals. Miss C, Hine, of “Greenbanks,” Te Kuiti, has returned home after a short holiday spent in Mangapehi. Miss J. Waldegrave, of Te Mapara, is the guest of Miss M. Buck, of Mangapehi. Mrs. Halcombe, of Pongakawa, Te Ruke, is the guest of her daughter, Mrs. F. Philpotts, of Mangapehi, for a short holiday.
