DESPICABLE ACTION
CATTLE MUTILATED. TE WAITERE FARMER’S DISCOVERY. Senseless and cruel mutilation of cattle has been reported from the Te Waitere district, a number of cows belonging to Mr. J. Stern having had their ears and tails -cut off.
The beasts were running on Mr. J. Scott’s property just to the northeast of Te Waitere when the attack on them was made. Some person or persons had apparently cut off the beasts’ tails and ears at night, and one had a sack tied over its head. When Mr. Stern found this animal, which had either been driven or wandered to his own property, it was his first indication of some person or person’s amazing action. Mr. Scott’s yards had apparently been used for the mutilation of the beasts, for gates and rails had been damaged.
Mr. Stern communicated with the police at Kawhia, but though it is some time since the incident occurred, no # action has been taken. Mr. Stern is mystified as to what motive any normal person could have for such a cruel and senseless action; he has no enemies in the district, nor knows of anyone who would descend into such fiendish, despicable cruelty.
