SCENE IN DANCE HALL

AN M.C. ASSAULTED. OBSCENE LANGUAGE CHARGE. Stated to have been making a general nuisance of himself at a Mangapehi dance owing to his intoxicated condition, a Maori, William Turner, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court yesterday to using obscene language in the supper room of the Mangapehi Hall, and with wilfully damaging the coat of the M.C, B. W. Cairns.

The police stated that Turner came into the dance hall much under the influence of liquor. An attempt was made to induce him to leave, but this was unsuccessful. Cairns, who was acting as M.C., requested Turner to leave the hall quietly, but the latter dived at Cairns, tearing the coat of his suit, and then used the language complained of in the hearing of several ladies. The defendant was fined 50s and costs in respect of the first charge, convicted and fined 20s and costs on the second, and asked to make good the damage to the coat.
