BOTH LOANS LOST
MAJORITY OF 77 AGAINST WATER LOAN. THE RATEPAYERS' POLL. TOTAL OF 267 VOTERS. Both the Borough Council's loan proposals, the Waterworks Improvement Loan of £23,000 and the Streets Improvement Loan of £SOOO, were lost at the poll of ratepayers held yesterday. The results announced shortly after the polling booth closed at 7 p.mu were as follows: WATER LOAN. For 91 Against 168 Informal J* Majority 77 STREETS LOAN. For H 5 Against 146 Informal 6 Majority 31 The total of ratepayers who voted was 267, whereas the number of ratepayers on the roll is 743. However, it has to be remembered that many of these were absentee ratepayers who would be unlikely to record their vote, and quite a number of others were companies, who, not realising the necessity to appoint a nominal occupier whose name shall appear on the roll, had no vote. Polling throughout the day was steady. Both the Borough Council supporters and those who opposed the loan had cars to take their sympathisers to the polling booth.
