YOUNG MAN CONVICTED

ON THREE CHARGES. FINES IMPOSED. At the Magistrate's Court, Taumarunui, yesterday, before Messrs. G. E. Manson and W. Thomas, J.P.'s, a young man was brought up on three charges: (1) That on January 29, 1935, at Te Kuiti, he did steal a motor cycle number plate and one motor cycle head lamp valued at £1 lis, the property of John William Walker; (2) that he did on July 28, at Okahukura, affix a certain number plate 18471 on a motor cycle for which it was not assigned and which was likely to be mistaken for the assigned number; (3) that between July 28 and August 15, 1935, he did use a motor cycle without a certificate or license duly endorsed. Accused pleaded guilty to the three charges. Senior-Sergeant Harley stated that accused purchased, on the hire system, a motor cycle from an Auckland firm and failed to keep up his payments. Early this year the firm repossessed themselves of the machine and discovered the number plate 18471. They reported the matter to the Postal Department and the police were asked to make enquiries. It was then found that the number plate and a headlight had been stolen from Walker's cycle at Te Kuiti. Accused admitted the offences and said he had thrown the headlamp away in a paddock. Accused was a single man, 21 years of age, and had never been in trouble before. His parents were well respected. Accused was convicted on the three charges and fined £5 in all and ordered to make restitution of the headlamp and plate at a cost of 31s. One month was allowed for payment of the fine. Accused asked that his name be suppressed.
