RAIN IN DISTRICT

HEAVY LOCAL SHOWERS.

TE KUITI MISSED.

“Heavy falls of rain have relieved the long dry spell in many parts of the district, though practically no rain has fallen in Te Kuiti itself. Hangatiki, Rangitoto, the townships up the line and other parts of the district have all benefited by heavy falls. A feature of the falls, however, has been that they were almost purely local. On Wednesday, when perfect weather was being experienced in Te Kuiti, Waimiha, Tangitu and Aria districts received a good soaking, torrential rain falling. On Thursday night it appeared certain that the town was going to experience a downpour, but the heavy thunder clouds, with a few low rumbles and a few drops of rain falling, passed away, though it was evident that some places benefited. Last evening the same position arose. Practically no rain fell in Te Kuiti, though from Otorohanga to well this side of Hangatiki a heavy downpour resulted. Heavy rain was experienced on the opposite side of the town and at Rangitoto. Even such a short distance away as the lime quarries a fairly heavy shower fell. During the last few days the soil has been noticeably drying up, and pastures are slowly taking on a yellow tinge. Gardens are suffering, and stringent restrictions have had to be placed on the use of hoses locally to conserve the water supply. In the country tanks are empty, and in those districts where rain fell the tale is told by mentioning how long it took the tanks to be filled. The record, though so far it is unconfirmed, appears to be a 400-gallon tank in two hours. The weather is still unsettled, and the chances of rain falling in districts not already benefited appear to be bright. Holiday makers are asking themselves if the conditions of last years are not going to be repeated—fine weather practically up to Christmas, and then blustering cold and rainy weather, over the Christmas and New Year holidays.
