AUSTRALIAN LABOUR

DRAMATIC DEVELOPMENTS. ..SPLIT WITH LANG PARTY. (Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 10.20 a.m.) Sydney, this day. The nominations for the Buli byelection owing to Mr. Lysaght's death, are: Mr. Arthur Butterell (United Australia Party), Mr. Paul Martin (Communist), and Mr. John Sweeney Lang (Labour), Mr. Albert Willis (Independent Labour). The Morning Herald says there was a dramatic development in the crisis in the State Labour Party, when many unions withdrew their support from Mr. Lang and decided to assist Mr. Willis in his candidature for the Buli seat.

These wholesale defections of Trade Hall Unions from Mr. Lang is a surprise to his supporters, who are now engaged in a desperate struggle- to retain control of the Labour movement for Mr. Lang and his executive. The Labour Daily says a feature of the nominations was the determination of Mr. Willis to continue his defiance of the Australian Labour by nominating as an Independent Labour candidate against the selected and endorsed Labour candidate. Mr. Willis has resigned from the Legislative Council.
