BREAKING UP THE ATOM.
CANCER HEALING APPARATUS. An assault on the atom in a'n attempt to break up the heaviest known element, uranium—is about to be made by two German scientists, Fritz Lange and Arno Brasch, who have already succeeded in breaking up the second heaviest metal —lead—by the use of an apparatus developing 2,400,000 volts. They have been working on a still more powerful equipment, which will not only be used for further experiments on the atom, but will also supply “beta” rays for cancer healing treatment, to be applied for the first time in Berlin on human beings. Herr Brasch declares that the intensity of the beta rays, as supplied hitherto by the available equipment, equalled in effect those of 1000 kilogrammes of radium. The total world supply of radium at present is no more than 350 grammes.
