MICK THE MILLER.
. CHAMPION COCKROACH SPRINTER. Mich the Miller has become the bookies’ terror at Juan-les-Pins, the little Riviera resort. He is, in fact, the champion cockroach of the Riviera. Cockroach racing has become all the rage in Juan-les-Pins. The tracks are glass-covered grooves, one for each entry. At the starting line, transparent covers are cupped over each insect, the finishing post being a dark hole at the end of the groove. When the “off” is signalled, a strongray of light is trained on the cockroaches, and the cups are lifted. Cockroaches shun light, and make their way as fast as they can to the refuge of the dark hole. Mick the Miller can win 1000 francs any day in the week and 2000 francs on a Sunday, and it is not expensive to keep him.
