COCKS TO TELL THE TIME.
CROWING RECORDS KEPT. It s suggested that a race of cocks might be produced by artificial selection, which would by their crowing tell the time with clock-like regularity. A Hollywood (California) man, Mr. Sinitsin, has forwarded to the editor of “Nature” detailed records of the night crowings of a cock which he kept in his study. Regular crowing, he states, occurred between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., each crowing coming at hourly intervals within ten minutes of the hour; before 11 p.m. there was no crowing after 5 a.m. it was not regular. Changes of atmospheric pressure, music, light and talking in the room did not affect the regularity. It is suggested that the paroxysms of crowing are caused by somethingin the atmosphere perceived by the bird in some unknown fashion, and that it is connected with the clock.
