CLEANING UP.
Salt is an excellent remedy for soot stains on carpets. Cover the marks thickly with common salt and sweep up. To clean fibre mats, thoroughly beat out the dust, then brush ove’~ with salt and water (a tablespoonful of salt to a gallon of water) and dry. Grass stains are sometimes obstinate, but a good methods is to fasten a piece of cotton wool over the tip of the finger, dip in methylated spirit, and work the stain gently with this, dubbing from the outside towards the centre of the fabric. Change the cotton-wool as it becomes soiled. Finally, wash cut in warm water to which a little borax is added. Rinse several times. If a few drops of salad oil are put in soapy water the dirt will be removed from wash-leather gloves almost immediately. Rinse the gloves in another lather, squeeze in a towel, and hang out in the air. This treatment leaves the gloves very soft.
