A ROYAL ROMANCE
PRINCE IGNORES KING'S COM-
MAND.
WILL MARRY COMMONER. (Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 10.26 a.m.) Stockholm, February 2. Despite the disapproval of the King, Prince Lennart has officially announced his engagement to Karin Nissvandt.
This coincides with the official communique pointing out that the constitution forbids the marriage without the consent of the King. In consequence Prince Lennart will lose all his rights as a Swedish Prince. Probably he will be known in future as Mr. Lennart Wilhelmson. He will also lose Castle Mainau, on Lake Constance, valued at £75,000, and certain jewellery. Nevertheless, the Prince has a considerable personal fortune. The whole country has taken sides in the controversy and is anxiously awaiting the next move in the drama. Few dared to predict that the Prince would so flagrantly oppose the King. It is expected he and his bride will depart from Sweden and be married abroad.
(The romance of Prince Lennart, the 21-year-old grandson of King Gustav, was reported to have ended in the refusal of the King to sanction his marriage to Karin Nissvandt, the beautiful 19-year-old daughter of a Swedish business man. The report of the engagement was published in the Stockholm newspapers, which stated that it merely awaited the formal consent of the King. This caused a sensation in Court circles. It was officially intimated that the King is of the opinion that the couple are too young. It is an open secret, however, that the real reason is because the Royal family, and virtually the entire Swedish nobility, believe that Karin's parents were responsible for the premature publication of the engagement report.)
