CAFFERY TRIAL ENDS.

MANSLAUGHTER VERDICT. SENTENCE TO-MORROW MORNING. Public interest in the trial of George Caffery for the murder of Thomas Leavy, as indicated by the attendance at the Supreme Court, was well maintained again yesterday, the third and final day of the trial. Leavy met his death as a result of a stabbing affray in Nelson Street on August 2. Mr Meredith., Grown Prosecutor, conducted the case before Mr Justice Smith, and Mr Dickson and Mr McLiver defended Caffery. About half past ten in the evening, after a retii'ement of a little longer than two hours, the jury returned with a verdict of guilty of manslaughter “with a strong recommendation to mercy because the jury believes that the full g(uilt was not Caffery’s.” Sentence will be pronounced to-morrow morning.
