CHARGE AGAINST INDIAN DOCTOR.
ALLEGED INDECENT ASSAULT.
“A DECENT LIVING GIRL.”
CONFIDENCE PLACED IN
DOCTORS
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, this day.
Sobbing bitterly at intervals during her evidence, a young woman sat in the witness box at the Supreme Court this morning, and told a story of an alleged indecent assault by the wellknown Indian doctor, Balder Singh Share.
“Not guilty,” said Share, in a firm voice when the charge of indecent assault on a female was read. , The case was heard by Mr Justice Herdman, and. the accused was represented by Mr Singer and Mr McLiver.
The Crown Prosecutor, Mr Meredith, said that Share, under the guise of a bone fide examination, had indecently handled the girl and misconducted himself towards her.
“This girl,” he said, “is 28 years of age, and medical evidence shows that she is a virgin. This is a decent living girl morally, and' a girl innocent in these matters. There is a confidence placed in doctors by all of us. We trust ourselves, our wives, and our children with medical men. Women allow doctors to carry out very intimate examinations, and that, is why girls can very easily be deceived by such men.”
After the evidence of the principal witness had been heard, Mr Singer asked that before her cross-examina-tion, the jury should see the room where it was alleged the offence was committed. His Honour agreed, hut Mr Meredith said he understood something had been done to the door of the room. Mr Singer said the room itself was the same as on September 26.
