THE ONGARUE DISASTER.
RESULT OF INQUIRY,
OFFICIALS EXONERATED. The report of the Board of Inquiry into the cause of the railway disaster at Ongarue on July 6 has been made public. The board finds that none of the officials were guilty of neglect in any way. The engine was properly equipped, the speed of the train was within the prescribed limit, and the whole of the track was in good order and condition. The board recommends a special examination of all sections of railway cuttings which may be a source of danger; the consideration of a stronger type of car for fast mail trains to enable them to resist the shock of collision or telescoping; and that better provision should be made on trains for medical equipment, lamps and tools in case of accident.
