A deputation from the Otago Harbour Board waited on the Hon. Mr Herries at Port Chalmers land asked for a reduction of freights on the Dunedin and Port Chalmers line, ard for the widening of Georg3 street pier, bo that the Board might proceed with the deepening of the berth and make it capable of accommodating vessels drawing 30 feet. Mr Herries, in reply, said ths whole question hinged on what the policy of the Board wa3 going to be. Were they going to make the main harbour at Dunedin or at the Port. The Department was prepared to meet them if they knew exactly what the policy of the Board was. Before they got that information he did not think the Department cou'.d commit itself to the expenditure, as it might later prove practically useless.
