TARANAKI LAND BOARD.

At the monthly meeting of the Taranaki Land Board on January 28th there were present—Messrs G. H. Bullard (Commissioner of Crown Lands) in the chair, J. Heslop, and J. Rattenbury. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs A. Coxhead and C. J. Ryan. The following business of interest to the King Country was transacted — Wm. Goodwin applied to transfer section 9, block 11, Ohura, 1256 acres, to H. Goodwin.—lt was decided to approve. LEASES. It <nas decided to re-offer section 8, block 11, Mahoe, 907 acres, formerly held by W. H. Jones, under part 3, at the same valuation. It was resolved that sections 3, 5, 7, S, etc., Tarata, be re-offered for lease under section 214 of the Land Act, 1908, at a rental of 45s per annum for 10 years. W. A. Quin formerly held sub division 3 and 5 of section 189, Patea district, Hawera.—lt was proposed to offer them for lease separately for a term of five years without right of renewal, section 3 at £26 per annum, and section 5 at £ls. —Left to the chairman to deal with. QUESTIONS OF FORFEITURE. F. J. Wasley, who selected section 7, block 10, Aria, 550 acres, stated he could not carry it on.—lt was resolved to cnacel his interest. A. J. W. AHerby acquired section 4, block 7, Waro, 265 acrsß, from Mrs Janet Eide, in September, 1913. He now stated that he did not inspect the sectiont sufficiently and found he could not carry it on. Resolved to declare his interest forfeited. W. Thornton acquired section 1, block 2, Totoro, 167 acres, by transfer in May, 1913, and the ranger reported that the section was deserted.—lt was resolved to call on the selector to show cause why his interest sh >uld not be declared forfeited.

The Kotare Progressive Committee called attention to non-residence by John Collett on section 1, block 10, Waro. This licensee had applied for leave of absence in order to get near school but it was found that there was a probability of a school being opened in the vicinity and the withdrawal of bis children would prejudice it. Leave was therefore refused, —It was resolved to call on the selector to show cause hy his interest should not be forfeited for non-residence.

The Kotare Progressive Association also called attention to non-residence by E. C. and W. H. Kent on sections 1, 2, and 3, block 6, Waro. These cases have been under consideration for some time, the lessees having requested time to dispose of their interests, being no longer able to reside. Mr Kent, aenr., promised that he would be in residence before March.—No action taken in the meantime. GENERAL. The following applications for issue of license for land held under improved farm agreement were approve: —Section 23 block 1, Tangitu, F. W. Hose; section 7, block 2, Tangitu, D. H. Morey; section 10, block 1, Tangitu, C. Fitzgerald. It was resolved t) approve of the issue of deferred payment license for section 2, block 2, Mahoe, 231 acres, held by Laurence Smith, on lease in perpetuity. The Mokau Coal and Estates Co. applied to purchase a strip of land of about 1 acre 2 roods 20 perches in Tangitu Survey District, to enahle a junctionto be effected between Purupuru and Mohakatino roads. —It was decided that the matter be left in the cha.rman's hands.

The Tangitu Settlers' Association (incorporated) applied to have the whole of the settlement declared a special district for reading purposes. It was resolved to recommend that, all sections in the settlement, with the exception of 24, block 11, 19, 21 22, block 12, Mapara, and 7, block 2, and 12, 13, 15, 17, 22, block 1, Tangitu (excluded in pursuance of subsection 5 of section 50 of the Land Laws Amendment Act, 1913), be declared a special district.

A. Lyford, whose wife selected section 1, block 3, Mapara, 610 acres, partly open land, on whicl# residence is due in June, 1914, asked for exemption from residence for 12 months. He moved in with hia family two months after the ballot, but on account of his wife's health wished to take her to the Thames.—lt was proponed that six months from July Ist, 1914, be granted.
