SALE OF MOKAU LANDS. Palmerston, Wednesday. The first sale of the Mokau estate in Taranaki, which has been much under the limelight during the past year, took, place to-day at Palmerston, when a portion comprising 25,000 acres was offered by auction by Messrs Abraham and Williams. Owing to the great interest attaching to the sale, which was advertised all over New Zealand, the attendance was fairly large The land consists of typical pastoral country in standing bush, limestone and papa soil, and calculated to carry two and a-half sheep per acre. It may, therefore, be computed to carry over 60,000 sheep on the nortion offered to-day, although it will be twelve months before any of the timber land can be ready for stocking. The timber consists chiefly of tawa, rimu, matai, and rata. Twelve sections were offered to-day. of which five sections were sold under the hammer, namely, sections 16, 3, 4, 5, and IS._ The reserve was reached for one of these, and slightly passed for the other four, prices ranging from £3 to £4 an acre. Keen interest appears to prevail for the remaining sections, which are expected to be sold shortly. It is understood that some of the purchasers were from Hawke's Bay and the South Island. Details are as follow:—Section 3, 1091 acres, J. R. Freeman, £3 10s per acre; section 4, 1123 acres, Freeman, £3 19s 6d per acre; section 16, 863 acre-, Freeman, £4 per acre; section 18, 2217 acres, D.
