PLETHORA OF MONEY.

THIEF TAKES A TOLL. In the Magistrate's Court at Wellington on Tuesday last, James Doyle, aged 41, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence after admitting three charges of theft. One concerned £4lO. William Thompson, an upholsterer, said he left a coat hanging up with about £4lO in the pocket in his business premises. Doyle came in and asked about a job he wanted done. He left and returned about fifteen minutes later. After this witness found the money was missing. No other person had entered the shop. Another witness gave evidence of losing a wallet and £l3 from a coat in his office. He was absent and found Doyle there when he returned. He afterwards found that the wallet had been taken.

Charles William Hammer, a tailor, left a coat hanging up with £7O in it. Doyle came in and asked about having a suit made. He said he would return the following week. Ten minutes after Doyle left, witness found that the money was gone.

Had this money been invested in the Post Office Savings Bank, trading bank, or in a National Savings Account, it would have been safe. Why are people so careless with their money, is it because it is too plentiful? A few years ago most business men had to raise an overdraft to meet their trading accounts, now, under the Labour Government these tradesmen appear to have an overplus of cash.
