ADVANCES ON RIGA. LONDON, August 10. Russian forces are reported to be advancing on Riga, the capital of Latvia, on a wide front. Heavy fighting has been taking place, and some German battalions are stated to have been reduced to less than 100 men. North and north-west of Siedlce strong Russian formations are advancing towards Warsaw, and the bridgehead on the west bank of the Vistula has been widened.
In the south Red Army forces have thrust through a pass in the Carpathians and have captured a town less than 20 miles from the border of Czechoslovakia.
“The Germans are rushing up great masses of men, tanks, and aeroplanes for the great battle for East Prussia,” says the Moscow correspondent of the British United Press.
“Battlefront reports state that huge reinforcements of men and equipment are pouring into the province. Russian reconnaissance pilots report that the Luftwaffe is massing ready for the big attack, and new squadrons of bombers and fighters occupy airfields throughout the province.
