IN THE PACIFIC ZONE.
AMERICANS WITHIN 600 MILES OF PHILIPPINES. SYDNEY, August 1. The American forces in New Guinea have thrust to within 600 miles of the Philippines. Strong landings were made on Sunday at Sansapor, on the north-western tip of Dutch New Guinea and on the nearby islands of Amsterdam and Middleberg. The new invasion move brings the Allied forces in the south-west Pacific up against the Japanese HalmaheraPhilippines defence line, the enemy’s last protective barrier for all his conquered territories in this war theatre. Announcing the latest landings, Geneal MacArthur’s communique to-day says that should the Halmahera-Philip-pi'nes defence line be broken all Japan ’s conquests south of China will be imperilled and in grave danger of flank envelopment
