ON THE NORMANDY FRONT. OVER 6000 PRISONERS TAKEN. LONDON, August 1. Troops of the United Slates Ist Army in Normandy are reported to have almost reached the border of Normandy and Brittany. Yesterday more than 6000 prisoners were captured by the Americans. South-east of Avranches American guns are shelling the town of Ducey, six from Avranches. ‘ ‘ Two American armoured columns crossed the Selune River to-day, enveloping Pontaubault, which is four miles south of Avranches and two miles north-west of Ducey,” says the Associated Press correspondent with the United States forces. The Associated Press correspondent on the Gaumont front reports that tank led British troops, in a 7000 yards’ advance, crossed the Soulevre River less than two miles from the German stronghold of Beny Bocage, which is seven miles north-north-east of Vire. Another British colump has linked up with the American forces at a point south-west of Foret I’Eveque, which is about three miles south-west of St. Martin des Besaces.
