CONTRIBUTION AND NATIONAL SECURITY TAX.

Income othe than salary or wages derived by a per son in receipt of a war pension in re spect of his total disablement thro'iigl service in the 1914-1919 War is cxemp from the charge. Monetary benefit from the Social Security Fund are als, exempt. Employers are reminded of their oh ligation to deduct wages tax from al payments for labour on whatever basi the labour may be engaged, whether oi . a timp, piecework, or contract basis and whether permanent or casual. At tention is also drawn to the necessit; of properly accounting for the wage tax within three days of deduction, am to the fact that severe penalties ar provided for non-compliance with th requirements.
On August 1 an instalment of the Registration Fee (5/) also becomes payable by all male persons, including Natives, 20 years of age or over, and all such persons must pay the fee or establish the right to exemption. Persons entitled to exemption, including those in receipt of an age benefit from the Social Security Fund and who are not in receipt of any other income arc reminded that they may be held liable for payment of the instalment unless a claim for exemption is completed and presented with the coupon book at a Money Order Office within seven days after the last day for payment of that instalment. Failure to pay renders defaulters liable, on a summary conviction, to a fine of £5. In addition, a penalty of 6d per month, with a maxiryum. penalty of 2/6 for each instalment, automatically accrues if payment is not made within one month following the d-ne date. Persons who attain the age of 16 years are reminded of their obligations to register under the Social -Security Act within one month of their sixteenth birthday and Io obtain possession of a coupon book. Neglect to do so within time allowed is an offence, and is punishable on conviction by a fine of £5O.
