KAIKOURA TROTTING CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Kaikoura Trotting Club was held in the Band Room on Tuesday night, Air W. S. Bennett (president) presiding. There were also present Messrs C. Clarke, J. J. Mackie, Parnell Smith, T. Alexander, E. H. Workman, T. G. Drabble, P. Al. Kerr, Al. J. Harnott, J. J. Harnett and W. F. Perrin( secretary). Apologies were received for the absence of Messrs F. Gibson, R. G. Miles, 1. Slapc, Hugh Alacklo, A. B. Clark, E. Firkin, J. Al. Reid, E. C. Latter, A. Gooch and Andrew Stewart. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mr C. E. Cholmondeley, members standing in silence. The minutes of the previous annual meeting were read and confirmed. The president, (Air W. 8. Bennett), presented the annual report and balance sheet. The balance sheet disclosed a loss for the season of £294, and the credit balance now remains at £lOO. The report reads:—

The balance-sheet to be put before you will doubtless cause you to share my keen disappointment at the financial loss sustained from the year’s operations. Less depreciation (£24 12/-) the loss for the year is £269 7/9, which is occasioned primarily from the coat of transport (£ll2 19/6), increased stakes £3O, 30 per cent, reduction in nomination and acceptance fees (about £45), memebr’s subscriptions reduced 50 per cent, cost of maintenance and sundry expenses. A good response wart received from owners and trainers in nominations and acceptaces, but was not backed up by the public, which is shown by reduced investments, instead of, as anticipated, an increase. However, we are still in credit at the bank and our loan of £2OO is paid, and, in view of the prevailing conditions, we must be thankful that we have something left. Our credit of last year was made from the sport of trotting and to that sport it has been returned. The Cheviot Club has approached us with a view to amalgamation, which you will consider. If we arc to continue as a Club serious consideration must be given to ways and means. I cannot close without making reference to the loss lhe Club has sustained by the death of Mr C. E. Cholmondeley, a zealous worker and an ideal member. To the committee, officers, and stewards and all who worked for the Club throughout the year, I tender my sincere thanks and trust, that the future will again be bright.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted.

Air T. Alexander forwarded his resignation as treasurer of the Club. —This was accepted with regret, the president referring to the excellent services to the Club rendered bj r Mr Alexander. The secretary of the N.Z. Trotting Association notified that the annu&L conference would bo held in on July 11.

Election of Officers. The election o£ officers resulted as follows: Patrons, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes (Prime Alinister), and Air E. F. Healy, M.P.; president, Air W. 8. The cost of the use of the privileges for the remainder of the season would be £3. The 'deputation then withdrew.

The president explained that the cost to the Trotting Club would be in tho vicinity of £56 if a meeting were not held this season.

The Cheviot Trotting Club wrote asking if the Kaikoura Club would consider amalgamation. It was decided to write to the Cheviot Club pointing out that no details were put forward and until some tentative proposals were made, the Kaikoura Club had nothing to put before its members. The Kaikoura Club would not consider amalgamation if the meeting was to be held at Cheviot, and suggested the acquisition of a course at Parnassus.

It was suggested that a public meeting be called to discuss the reply from the Cheviot Club.

Air J. J. Mackie moved as a recommendation that a flat rate b<‘ charged for admission to the course

It was resolved that the lease of the racecourse be terminated on the expiry date of the present lease, when fresh arrangements would be made regarding grazing rights.

Messrs J. J. Harnett, E. 11. Workman, and T. Alexander were appointed a committee, with power to act, to go into the matter of framing a new lease. A vote of thanks was passed to Air H Collyns for a gift of grass seed.
