LAUDER STORY
Stop us if you have heard this one. George Graves, the well-known English comedian, one day telephone; Guy’s Hospital, and in a voice vibrant with distress asked if his dog, a favourite wire-haired terror, could be X-rayed. He explained that the pup had swallowed a penny by accident. The examination was made and the coin located. But it was decided that it v. ould be too dangerous to try to remove it. George was asked how the mishap had occurred. He would not divulge the secret, but the story gained currency that he had been tossing with Sir Harry Lauder for a drink, and the dog, infected by the general excitement, had jumped up and caught the coin as it was descending. One fact lends credence to the story. Graves was anxious to know if the film would, show which way the penny had dropped — presumably in order to be able to claim his drink if he had won!
