SUPPORT GIVEN

PAEROA AMBULANCE

RUGBY UNION LETTER

BOROUGH COUNCIL DECISION

“You will no doubt have noticed from recent press reports that my union is desirous of assisting the Paeroa St. John Ambulance Association to purchase an ambulance to service this district, as the lack of an ambulance has

for many years been a serious handicap to sporting bodies and members of the public generally,” wrote Mr W. Faber, chairman of the Paeroa Rugby Football Union to the October meeting of the (Paeroa Borough Council. The letter went on to state that the management committee had discussed the needs of the district very fully with a sub-committee of the St. John Ambulance Association and it had been decided that to purchase \an ambulance, fully equipped, a minimum sum of £2OOO would be required. It was confidently felt that that sum was not beyond the means of the district,

and the union, with the full approval of the St. John association sub-com-mittee was calling a public meeting in an endeavour to raise the required money.

The meeting would be asked to appoint a committee to control the funds and it was hoped that the council would be represented in force in order that the matter might 'be fully discussed, and could see its way clear to make a liberal contribution to a most worthy cause. In conclusion Mr Faber said that he was accordingly directed' to bring the matter before the council so that its views might be expressed at the public meeting, and he trusted that all organisations and the public would respond so generously that an ambulance could be obtained in the shortest possible time.

A fund had already been established stated the mayor, Mir Edwin Edwards, and there was a sum of money, about £4OO, in hand for the purpose of purchasing an ambulance. When the previous Government had decided that ambulances were to be provided as benefits under the Social Security Act the campaign for collection was held in abeyance. Just recently it had been announced that ambulances would not be included in Social Security benefits and he, therefore, thought that councillors should attend the meeting proposed to be called for the purpose of proceeding with the campaign for funds for the ambulance and give their support to the proposal.
