WATER FREIGHT
ANOTHER SERVICE
NEW COMPANY FORMED AUCKLAND TO PAEROA Of interest to business man and farmer alike is another water freight service about to be established between Auckland and Paeroa. The Hauraki Shipping Co. Ltd. was incorporated in July last and has purchased for this work, from Australia, a twin screw vessel, the “Hauraki grader,” suitable for cargo carrying on both sea and river. The company is a private one in which local farmers and business men hold a considerable portion of the capital. The registered office of the company is at Paeroa, which is the home port of the vessel and local carriers will share in the freight carried. The Hauraki Trader, formerly the Daphne, is an ex-army lighter used by the Australians in New Guinea. She has a carrying capacity of some 250 tons of cargo, is 106 feet in length and has a draught of six feet when fully loaded. The vessel is an ocean going twin screw craft driven by two Diesel engines developing 200 h.p. She is commanded by Captain A. A. Dickson, who accompanied the vessel from Australia, and who has been connected with coastal trading in and around Auckland for many years. ' The vessel will be at the Puke wharf, Paeroa, over next week-end and is open to inspection by interested parties. This new service will run to a regular Schedule of at least two trips a week and will commence on November 7. The vessel has a carrying capacity capable of dealing immediately with any local requirements and the enterprise of the shareholders in establishing the project is to be commended.
