INDOOR BASKETBALL

MATCHES IN PAEROA LARGE CROWD OF SPECTATORS A further series of games in the Pareoa Indoor Basketball Club’s competition was played on Tuesday last, when several evenly contested and exciting games were witnessed.

‘ A larger crowd of spectators than usual was present, due to the stimulus given by the recent tournament, -and the future success of this indoor sport, fast growing in popularity, seems assured.

The first game was an even match between Kiwis and Naiads. The Kiwis handled the ball much better than usual, with R. Martin and I. Bain combining' well in the forward court. All of the Naiads played well and the team will develop into a strong combination with more experience.

Ajax had little difficulty in beating Bluebirds who had a hard game against superior shooting and passing backed by good in both forward and back courts. For the winners M. Crosbie showed out with her shooting while E. Smith at guard, played well.

Playing with their usual crisp passing and good anticipation, Dodgems accounted for A.C,A. quite easily. R. Shaw and C. Shaw had a night on form with their shooting and V. Shaw intercepted well on defence aild combined well with the shooters when she came across the line. The defence for A.C.A. was not up th its usual stand- . ard, with the result that the shotters rarely received the ball in a good goaling position. r In the first of tjie men’s games P.H.D. v. Dodgery, t the through over-eagerness, let many opportunities break 4|&wnJ ' combination of this w|m, usually very smooth, often breaks down. dpe to haste, and a little,* can- ' trolled basketball would produce better results. The PJI.D. defence did not give Dodgers many ChinceS, and when. N. Waridg did manage to break , through the spectators were not slow to show ■ their appreciation.,' , For T.H;D. Fathers was shooting very well and was supported inr turn by F. Treanor and L. TyrnbulL N. Waring at defence for Dodger came through a lot of work with credit.

In what proved to be another eliciting match Buccaneers managed to hold off Aces and win by two points. For the winners K. Millar played a good game at guhrd,. whilst J. Lally’ ' and W. Scott also showed pleasing form* Aces started slowly, but improved as they wanned up. The handling of this team as a whole was not up to standard but it . contains a few beginners who, with a little more experience, will male their presence felt? \ 1
