CUP RETAINED

PAEROA SUCCESSFUL MATCH WITH THAMES T. WILLIAMS’ GOOD EFFORT In the Court Cup cricket match played on the Paeroa Domain on Saturday, Paeroa successfully defended the cup by playing out time. The Paeroa team was very fortunate because its last two batsmen were at the crease when time was called.

The degree of uncertain / over the last 15 minutes made th? game extremely interesting, with the Paeroa supporters hoping their men would last out, and with the Thames supporters barracking loudly for their team’s success.

Paeroa won the toss and sent the challengers in to bat. Thames made the most of their opportunity ahd proceeded to put on a very creditable total of 212. Top scorer for Thames was D. Muir, who carefully and stolidly compiled 45 runs. B. Guthrie, the opening batsman, batted purposefully for 31. T. Death, the tenth man,

was undefeated for 28. Paeroa’s most successful bowlers were K. Goldsworthy, five wickets for 31 runs, and R. S. Nicol, two wickets for 10 runs. A feature of the game and the highlight of Paeroa’s reply was an outstanding exhibition by the colt, T. Williams. This batsman after going in first drop batted very attractively, scoring 75 runs. Apart from R. S. Nicol’s 30 there was not another batsman able to make a stand and the stumps were drawn with Paeroa eight wickets down for 161'runs. G. Hawkins, four wickets for 28 runs and E. Wills, three wickets for 36 runs, bowled well for Thames. Details:— Paeroa: R. S. Nicol, lbw, b Hawkins, 30; I. Kurtovich, b Hawkins, 12; T. Williams, c Guthrie, b Hawkins, 75; F.
